The evening will include a panel talk, book launch, live music, and food.
The panel, chaired by Trà My from An Việt Archives & Tilted Axis Press will feature:
Dr. Thúy Võ Đặng a professor of Information Studies at UCLA, oral historian, arts advocate and author from Orange County, California. Thuy's work advances community-centered archives practice, a means and method of bringing social justice into the creation and stewardship of historical records for minoritized communities.
Thuận is one of the most exciting contemporary Vietnamese writers. She is the author of ten novels and a recipient of the Writers’ Union Prize, the highest award in Vietnamese literature. 7 of her books were translated and published in France. Chinatown, her debut novel in English, won a PEN Translates Award, the 2023 ALTA National Translation Award, is the Runner-Up for TA First Translation Prize 2023, and was shortlisted for the 2023 Republic of Consciousness Prize. Thuận’s is currently in the UK to celebrate her new book Elevator in Saigon.
Cường Minh Bá Phạm works between/ in / nearby / at the intersections of sound, community, and archives. He is interested in learning (and unlearning) our understandings of history, community, movement, family, sound, language, and memory, and how they can inform, challenge, or be influenced by power, knowledge, and/ or subjectivity. He is actively involved in the East & Southeast Asian communities in London, primarily working with local refugee and precarious communities.
We will be celebrating the launch of Thuận’slatest novel Elevator in Sai Gon. A suspenseful novel that is part detective story, historical romance, postcolonial ghost story and a biting satire of life in a communist state.
Food will be available for purchase throughout the evening from Vinaxoa.
The evening will end with live audio-visual performance from Nammywams, London-based music producer and DJ specialising in grime, UK drill, and related sounds. Nammywams has composed a live original responding to his own deconstructed edit of Hai Ninh’s iconic war drama, Little Girl of Hanoi (1974).
